If your parents left their homeland in search of peace and sanity after WW2 and are no longer here to tell you about their experiences, you may well find their displaced persons camp registration card and other documentation on the Arolsen Archives website.

I grew up asking questions about my parents’ lives in Estonia and how they came to live in Australia, and was led to believe that no records would exist because the Nazis and Soviets would have burnt everything after the war to cover their tracks. I figured they were probably right, as disappointing as it was.

In 1988/89, I was inspired to research my Estonian family history, which also coincided with the exciting, peaceful, Baltic ‘Singing Revolution which led to independence from the Soviet Union. But I could only access information about the dark political history from the turn of the century onwards, and the notorious 1939 Molotov/ Ribbentrop Pact which eventually culminated in the illegal annexation of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to the Soviet Union.

Fast forward to 2018 and I discovered the existence of an online site called International Tracing Services and the availability of historical records from the ‘Nazi files’. I immediately sent an email request for records about my dear Estonian father and on February 20, 2019, I received an email about his ‘Path of Persecution’. The letter was accompanied by various registration cards with his ‘displaced persons’ details and even the passenger list of the Nea Nellas ship that transported him from Naples to Australia on 24 January 1949. His 23^rd birthday.

In late 2024, my sister and I got together to review historical documentation belonging to our mother and father (both now in spirit) and memorable old family photos and decided to create a photo story about our childhood. That inspired me to contact ITS to seek information about my mother, nana, auntie and other extended European family members who became my aunties and uncles and enjoyed many legendary parties at our River Street house in St Peters, Adelaide, South Australia.

To my absolute delight, I discovered that ITS was now the fully fledged, online Arolson Archives, an international center on Nazi persecution with the world’s most extensive collection of documents about the victims and survivors of National Socialism. I have since spent many hours exploring the extensive, well designed website and also found records of my father, mother, aunty, nana, Latvian uncle and most of our family friends.

I have also been reminded that the Nazi death cult’s persecution, torture, experimentation and extermination of innocent men, women and children was not limited to the Jewish people. May they be banished to history books, never to rise and enslave millions of people ever again. And were you aware that the British invented both Nazism and Communism?

Thankfully, even though the Nazi/Commie etc death cult Fourth Reich/New World Order/blah blah blah refuses to accept this reality, this is their last attempt at world domination and they will not succeed. From what I have been learning on an esoteric and political level since 2020, this is their end times because humanity is awakening from a centuries-old ‘dream spell’ for the first time in the history of planet earth.

In my opinion, the Age of Permanent Light is upon us. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)

The Arolsen Archives is an international center on Nazi persecution with the world’s most extensive collection of documents about the victims and survivors of National Socialism. The documents relate to the various groups persecuted by the Nazi regime and contain references to around 17.5 million people, making them an important source of knowledge for society today.

Many of the around 30 million documents are now available in the Online Archive of the Arolsen Archives. The number of searchable names and keywords is growing all the time.

In 2020, our Online Archive received the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award 2020, Europe’s highest honor in the field of preserving cultural heritage.

In addition to conducting your own research, you can submit inquiries to the Arolsen Archives. Not all documents are online yet, so we will be happy to help you clarify the fates of individuals and trace their paths of persecution.

For people who were persecuted, deported, and imprisoned in concentration camps as “anti-social elements” or “career criminals,” official recognition as “victims of the National Socialist system of injustice” was long in coming. Not until February 2020 did the German Bundestag approve a motion to recognize these victims. Finally, after a lifetime of stigmatization, they are now included in remembrance and public commemoration.

The Nazis managed to take control of press and radio within a very short space of time. Even before the Schriftleitergesetz (Editor’s Law) was passed, journalists had become public servants who were dependent on the goodwill of the Nazi regime if they wanted to stay out of danger. Only those who refrained from criticizing the politics of the regime and who had an “Aryan certificate” proving they fulfilled racial requirements were able to continue working. Everyone else was banned from the profession.

However, some media professionals still got involved in the resistance – both in Germany and in occupied countries. In this special series, we want to introduce you to a few of them – and also look at places where journalists are still being persecuted today.

Nazi Germany’s Editor’s Law: The End of Freedom of the Press

“I have the natural intention to be and to remain the warm-hearted protector of the German press.” These are the words Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels used when he introduced the so-called Schriftleitergesetz (Editor’s Law) on October 4, 1933 – a law that fundamentally changed the work of journalists in Germany.

The Nazis chose the term “Schriftleiter” to refer to journalists because it sounded more German.

From that moment on, journalists had register in a professional roster to be able to exercise their profession – only people with an “Aryan certificate” (proof of Aryan descent) were accepted. Schriftleiter also needed to have one year of professional training behind them, and they were only allowed to work once they had completed a training course and taken a final examination.

When the law came into force on January 1, 1934, many hundreds of journalists lost their jobs. Some stood no chance of being included on the professional roster because they were Jewish or non-Aryan, others because their opposition to the Nazi regime meant they would not toe the party line, for example.

Anyone who worked for the press was directly subordinate to the Ministry of Propaganda and was accountable to the Ministry – instead of to their publishers.

»Editors are especially bound to keep out of the newspapers anything which: (…) tends to weaken the strength of the German Reich, outwardly or inwardly, the common will of the German people, the German defense ability, culture, or economy, or offends the religious sentiments of others.«

Regardless of whether they lived in the German Reich or in the occupied nations, media professionals like Carl von Ossietzky, Milena Jesenská, and Titus Anno Brandsma who were involved in the resistance were often arrested, deported to concentration camps, and mistreated; many of them were killed. However, this was not the only reason why there was little opposition to the law: After the Gleichschaltung (forced coordination) of the press, Schriftleiter had a status similar to that of civil servants. If they behaved in the right way, it was almost impossible to dismiss journalists who toed the party line.

An “announcement” made by the provisional post-war government on June 20, 1945, repealed and annulled the Schriftleitergesetz. One of the consequences of the law’s repeal can still be felt today: anyone can call themselves a journalist, there are no legal restrictions on entry to the profession.
